Sonia Oliveira is a post-doctoral researcher at the COMPASS group. She received her PhD in Human Physiology (2018) from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and MSc (2011) in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Aveiro. During her PhD, she focused in the Nerve-Cancer connection using human tissues. In previous projects, she also investigated the molecular control of the mammalian male meiosis. And, before she investigated the anatomical and physiologic effects of compounds present in herbal extracts.
She has broad research interests namely in pathology, regenerative medicine and in neurophysiology. She studies the use of encapsulated pancreatic cells for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. And in parallel, she is interested in biomimetic systems to regenerate hard and soft tissues. Outside the lab, she enjoys travelling, hiking and the wilderness, as well as listening to music and watching movies.
