Leila has a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Aveiro and in her final project she studied the potential biodegradation of e-waste microplastics by Penicillium brevicompactum leading to a published article. She branched out and, within the COMPASS group, is working on her thesis focused on the development of smart natural structures capable of mimicking the dynamics of native human tissues.
In her free time, she enjoys photographing her surroundings, reading, and watching great shows. She also loves playing FPS games which require creativity and teamwork to win-much like working in a laboratory.
